The Family

The Tower was built by Panagiotis Petropoulakis and it was inhabited by his son Petropoulos, that participated in the revolution the 1821 and collaborated with their Kapodistria's party as captain of the expeditionary corps against in their Mauromichailous's party.

Dimitris, his son, fought for the liberation of Crete from the Turkish as captain of the expeditionary corps and was killed in the Kasteli Chania. His son - Aristeidis member of Parliament the period 1887-1902, grandson of Dimitris - Dimitris member of Parliament with Eleftherios Venizelos 1910-1935. Leonidas, the son of Aristeidis, took part in the National Resistance. The Rachi was burned in 1943 by the Nazi conquerors as reprisal.

In the top of hill that combined the strategic importance control of passage from and towards Mani, but also the fine climate, choosed the Petropoulakides to build the Towers (for the fourth time) 220 years ago.

The family - one of bigger in Mani - was found in the locality Rahi, hardly 3,5 km outside from the Gythion, after repeated conflicts from 1690 (that was written) with Turkish. The family was removed from the Castle of Kelefa's of Palaiokaliazi, to the Panitsa and finally Rach region.

Strategic control point due to the best view: westwards the Taygetos mountain, northwards the Parnonas mountain, Easter wards and southwards the Lakonikos Gulf and the Mani.
